URANUS is a play about waste.

William Herschel is furiously building (and destroying) telescopes so that he might get closer to his beloved new discovery. Two young backpackers are mysteriously transported to a planet made entirely of Earth's garbage. A derelict called Gaea searches among piles of her treasured trash for a waste rock that has the power to restart the world. Told with physical poetry and moronic humor, URANUS is a hodgepodge of history, myth and make-believe.

URANUS premiered in June 2008 with Upright Egg Theatre Company (St. Paul, MN.) It was a semi-finalist for the 2009 O'Neill National Playwrights Conference.

"In the moments before they were propelled like rubber chickens from a cannon and sent hurtling into the black boundless vacancy, Our Boys' ears thought they heard a voice. Someone far away, or far below, an ancient whisper...a woman's voice. But before they had time to ask "Who's there?", they were nothing but brains and catapulting back towards Earth."

In URANUS, the audience is our set designer! Our audience members brought us their unwanted stuff to build our world. Here are a few of the things you helped add to our set:

  • something from another world
  • something you regret having bought
  • a memory from childhood
  • something that makes music
  • something that disgusts you
  • the most beautiful thing that you never want to see again
  • "this is me all over"
  • something that breaks your heart
  • something scandalous
  • a secret
  • something green
  • something that isn't what it seems
  • smaller than a breadbox... or just a breadbox
  • light as a feather, stiff as a board
  • a horcrux
  • something utterly useless
  • something that could be an alien spaceship
  • something that could be prehistoric
  • something that's just funny
  • a microcosm
  • something undefinable
  • something that still has the tag
  • a synecdoche
  • something that doesn't belong
  • "i'll never let go"
  • something homemade
  • something multi-functional
  • something baroque
  • "i have no idea what this is or how it got here"
  • wisdom itself
